Hi, CWIP members. There are a number of open roles on the 2021-2022 CWIP board. Caroline and I will both be stepping down as membership directors. Caroline has to leave at the end of April, and I will leave at the end of this programming year in June. If you are interested in volunteering, please chime in on this thread.

Hi, CWIP members! With the prospect of a return to normal life sooner rather than later, even if we don’t exactly know when that is, has the pandemic changed your career goals in any way?

Hi, CWIP members! Do you have any specific networking purposes you would like other CWIP members to help you with? For instance, if you’re a developmental editor of fiction, I would love to hear from you! My address is mirandalukatch at gmail dot com.

    • I would love to do more beta reading exchanges, especially with people who write/read speculative fiction, surreal fiction, and horror. I also want to connect with more writing YouTubers! My address is tiffanytcole at gmail dot com

Hi, CWIP members! I thought it would be fun if we discussed what first drew us to publishing and what our specific interests in the industry are. I have wanted to be an editor since I was eight years old, when I asked my mother who was responsible for choosing the stories that were made into books. I have since decided that acquisitions isn’t for…[Read more]

    • Hey Miranda! It’s so cool you knew so early on that editor was the job title. I started as a writer. I wrote an entire box-full of books in notebooks throughout middle school and high school and got really close to getting published my senior year of high school but then I got stage fright and felt like I needed to become a better writer before I…[Read more]

    • Wow Tiffany, that’s an amazing story! How were you able to send the authors critiques? That’s such a great idea. I’d love to chat with you about your editing days and how you found clients.

    • Hey Sara! One of these days we need to schedule a meeting to talk. That, or on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I always do a live video on YouTube (Business at Tiffany’s) at 7 PM CST where you can also ask questions and I can talk about it during the live.

To answer your question, I used to run a book reviewing business. When I received a book to…[Read more]

Hello, CWIP members! What are your career goals for 2021, and how can CWIP help?

    • This year I want to make progress toward a certificate from the Graham School. I have taken one class but now I need to complete an application to the program. An accountability partner who could support me in getting through the application process would be great.

    • Hi, Amber! Congratulations on starting the certificate program. What do you feel are the challenges involved in your application process? Perhaps if you outlined them, other CWIP members would have a better idea of what being your accountability partner would involve.

    • It’s the personal statement! I haven’t written one before and I don’t know any of the norms around them. I’m not afraid to draft and revise but I haven’t even got a starting point to work from…

    • Were you given a prompt or any kind of guidance from the school about the personal statement?

    • That’s a great question, and I had been so intimidated by the prospect that I hadn’t even gotten far enough into the application process to answer it! Already this is tremendous progress!
“Please enter a 250 word statement of purpose explaining your interest in the program and how it applies to your personal and/or professional goals.”
      Now that I…[Read more]

    • Happy to help, Amber! We do have CWIP members and board members who are alumni of the program, so if you get stuck, let us know. I’m sure we can find someone to help you.

    • Hi, Amber. I know you said you were going to give yourself a few days to draft your statement, but I was wondering if you still want an accountability partner. If you do, we can put you into the member news section of eCWIP and try and find someone for you. Do you want us to? As I said before, we can also connect you to Graham School alumni. Would…[Read more]

    • Hello Amber and Miranda! Amber, have you submitted your personal statement yet? If so, I wish you the best with that!

In terms of my career goals for 2021, it’s to write more fiction and nonfiction books and short stories and grow my YouTube channel, Business at Tiffany’s. Every Wednesday and Friday, I have a free live Writing Session where I…[Read more]

    • Progress has been made! I got the statement of purpose and application done, and I enrolled in an upcoming professional development class.

    • That’s great, Amber! What class did you enroll in? I’m sure our members are always looking for good sources of professional development.

We just had our January board meeting, and we have decided to scale back on some of the programmings until we have the COVID 19 epidemic behind us. The January event is still on the calendar, “Publishing Advice from CWIP Board Members” This is your chance to talk with board members on a variety of topics. The event will be on Zoom from 6:30 to…[Read more]

What are you most hoping to gain from talking to your fellow CWIP members? Discuss. If you have already networked with other CWIP members, please let us know how you benefited from that.

    • I thought I’d start this thread with my experience. I have enjoyed having a chance to share my knowledge of freelancing with newcomers to the industry, and I have benefited by some informational interviews with CWIP members who have taken the Graham School editing certificate courses. Hearing about their experiences has given me a better idea of…[Read more]

    • Hey Miranda,

When I first joined CWIP, I was looking for a job in publishing and was hoping to build meaningful relationships with those who worked in publishing. Networking with the then president of CWIP genuinely helped me get hired. My advice to you if you’re talking to fellow CWIP members for job opportunities? Genuinely be interested in…[Read more]
