CWIP is launching its new programming year with a focus on the wide range of opportunities available in the publishing profession. Panelists will describe how they made their mark in a dynamic and ever-changing industry while relying on CWIP to provide resources along the way. Plenty of time will be available for attendees to ask questions.

Panelists Marlene Brill, Dorothy Ryan, and Judith West will explain the careers they have built in traditional and emerging publishing venues while sharing tips on working as freelancers, contractors, and employees in the industry. They will cover how they started in the industry, the skills they bring to their work, and how they’ve pivoted their approaches to meet evolving technologies and markets over their careers as they look ahead to new opportunities in the field.

Marlene Targ Brill is an award-winning author of 72 published books for readers from preschool through adult. After thirteen years as a special educator, she first launched a freelance career in public relations, writing, editing, and indexing, with clients in the education, trade, association, and other special markets; that is, before getting bit by the book bug. Her latest books include the Bank Street honor book, Dolores Huerta Stands Strong: The Woman Who Demanded Justice; her favorite novel, Picture Girl; and the Children's Choice Tooth Tales from around the World. You can see additional accomplishments at www.marlenetargbrill.com A long-time CWIP member and leader, Marlene chaired CWIP’s freelance committee for many years, holding separate meetings for freelance members and producing a directory of freelancers that was available to employers throughout the industry.

Judith West has informed, entertained, and otherwise engaged audiences for more than three decades on the page, in the studio, and onstage. Combining her theatrical, literary, and teaching abilities, she has built overlapping careers in audiobooks (as a narrator, producer, writer, and coach) and in print and electronic publishing (as researcher, writer-editor, trainer, and project developer). Judith has also performed in Chicago theatres, taught and directed at Chicago universities, and worked both freelance and in-house with major and independent publishers, including HarperCollins and Encyclopaedia Britannica (U.S. and India). She co-curates the pronunciation resource www.AudioEloquence.com and is a long-time CWIP member (board member: 2005-12, 2021- ).

Dorothy Ryan is a creative director and strategic designer skilled in translating business needs into unique, memorable marketing campaigns. After 12 years as a graphic designer and creative services manager in corporate marketing departments, she launched Studio D Creative & Consulting. Studio D provides creative services and communications planning for small businesses as well as in-house marketing departments in a range of industries. The same year she started Studio D, 2001, Dorothy attended her first CWIP Kickoff, and credits CWIP with the experiences, education, and supportive relationships that sustain her to this day. Active in CWIP, she served as president in 2008-09.

The session will be moderated by former CWIP president (1982-83) Deb McBride, who has managed McBride Strategic Services since 2008, a consultancy focused on medical publishing—particularly development, publication, and implementation of evidence-based clinical guidelines. She directed several international association publishing programs over the course of her career. She counts many CWIP members among her steadfast friends and advisors.
