Amazon’s Effect on Publishing

November 15, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

We’ve all seen the growth of Amazon over the past decade and its far-reaching effects on the publishing industry. CWIP is taking a closer look at how Amazon has affected how publishers produce, sell, and deliver their content. We're going to have several panelists from the Chicago publishing industry speak to their experience, and how Amazon has affected their professions. This event is going to be a town-hall style event, so please be prepared to participate if you wish.

Our panelists include:

Aaron Howe

Aaron began his career as a bookseller with Hudson Group at O'Hare International Airport. He went on to become a store supervisor and assistant manager at O'Hare before managing the Barbara's Bookstore at Macy's on State Street. Since 2013, he has worked for Independent Publishers Group in Chicago, Illinois, where he is the trade sales manager. He enjoys reading, watching mixed-martial arts, and playing chess.

Lise Marinelli

Lise founded Windy City Publishers in January 2009 after realizing the publishing industry was changing dramatically and the old way of doing business was not meeting the needs of new writers. As a first-time author, she recognized that few opportunities existed for new writers to collaboratively work with a team of publishing and design experts who shared their passion, goals, and willingness to work for the success they desired. Lise honed her business management and client-service skills as owner of a number of successful business ventures. Her experience as an author keeps her connected to the creative side of the publishing business and her mission for Windy City Publishers is simple—continue to serve the literary community with integrity and honesty, and to give writers and authors their best chance for success. Lise received her B.S. in Accounting with high honors from the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University.

Greta Bennion

Greta has over 10 years of experience working in the publishing industry. After majoring in Creative Writing at Denison University and graduating from the Denver Publishing Institute in 2005, she went on to work in various roles at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson, and the University of Chicago Press. She is now the Marketing Manager at Northwestern University Press, where she’s been a proud Wildcat for seven years. She lives with her family and two cats in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago.

Deirdre Kennedy

Deirdre graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 2014 with a BA in advertising/public relations. She is currently the marketing coordinator for Agate Publishing, an Evanston-based independent publisher of food and lifestyle books, leadership and business books, and literature for all ages from African American voices. She lives in Chicago.
